HALO unveils new helicopter
On February 11, fire chiefs, key supporters and community leaders from across southern Alberta travelled to Medicine Hat Regional Airport to see the unveiling of HALO Air Ambulance’s newest member of the fleet.
The latest bird is also a BK17 B2, just like the original. But the new one has some differences that the folks at HALO are really excited about.
"One of the greatest advantages of this bold and highly visible design is that when this aircraft takes to the skies, there will be no doubt - it’s HALO. With its striking orange accents, this helicopter is instantly recognizable, ensuring that when people see it in the air, they know help is on the way,"said Paul Carolan, HALO’s chief executive officer.
The custom branding incorporates elements of southern Alberta’s landscapes, such as the Rocky Mountains, prairies and rolling hills. The design also features the Medicine Hat’s famous Saamis Teepee to symbolize its home base at the Medicine Hat Regional Airport.
"But it represents far more than just a new look. It is a symbol of the unwavering support of our community, the trust placed in our mission, and the lifesaving impact we deliver across Southern Alberta. The landscape elements woven into the design serve as a tribute to the vast and often challenging terrain our crews navigate in service of those who need us most,” Carolan said.
Beyond its distinctive design, the aircraft is equipped with higher-performing engines and upgraded classifications, improving operational efficiency and minimizing downtime. This ensures HALO remains ready for urgent, lifesaving missions. HALO’s previous helicopter will remain in operation, focusing on community outreach to further connect HALO with the people it serves. It will operate when the newest helicopter is receiving maintenance or experiencing downtime.
"This aircraft stands as a testament to the generosity of our donors, the dedication of our partners, and the resilience of the communities we serve. Every mission HALO undertakes is made possible by the dedication of those who believe in our organization, and this helicopter is a bold reflection of that shared commitment. The design itself tells the story of the communities we serve,” said Dale Thacker, HALO’s board chair.
