Chestermere Fire Service recognized for exemplary conduct
The think-quicking actions of a Chestermere Fire Services crew were honoured recently by the MFR team.
“The Chestermere team demonstrated outstanding work during a recent high-acuity, low-occurrence event. This particular call came to the attention of the Alberta MFR team through a PCR escalation request, and upon review, it was clear the crew went above and beyond - thinking quickly and acting decisively to deliver exceptional, compassionate patient care,” said Brigitte Calder, MFR strategist.
One of the crew members, Benjamin Bishop, was still a probationary firefighter at the time of the event.
“Benjamin is an advanced care paramedic and he performed a critical intervention, ultimately saving the patient’s life, allowing them more time with their family. As soon as we saw the PCR, we realized he should be commended for thinking outside of the box and acting in the best interest of the patient,” Calder said.
Firefighters Matthew Relf, Brett Brandon, Joshua Sather, William Wood, William Smith and Quinn Terepocki were also honoured for commendable service during the event.
Dr. Kevin Hanranan attended the recognition ceremony to present the certificates along with the MFR team – and the ceremony was an extra special experience for him as well.
“Kevin recently retired from EMS, and as our medical director. He has been a huge advocate for the MFR program for many years. His dedication and passion have left a lasting impact—not only on the MFR program but on countless lives,” said Calder. “We will miss him, but we wish him all the best in what will surely be a retirement full of adventure.”
The MFR program is pleased to have the capacity to recognize exceptional service during high acuity, low-frequency events. To bring such events to the MFR team’s attention, please email mfr@emergencyhealthservices.ca.
